What the strip on 3M VHB tape is for
These LED strips carry red 3M VHB tape on the back. Their standard versions (140 LED/m, 192 LED/m and RGBW 60 LED/m) use brown 3M 300LSE tape. VHB is a double-sided acrylic foam tape. According to 3M, the foam flows into the microscopic irregularities of the surface, and its elasticity absorbs dynamic loads and damps vibration. That makes the VHB strip a good fit where the surface moves or is not perfectly flat.
Where to use it
- ✅ Furniture, display cases and shop fittings: parts that vibrate when they are opened, closed or moved.
- ✅ Vehicle interior fit-outs, in a dry place.
- ✅ Mounting straight onto a wall or ceiling, including vertical runs. 3M states that VHB tapes can often replace rivets and screws.
- ✅ Smooth metal, glass and plastics such as acrylic (PMMA), ABS, polycarbonate or PVC.
- ✅ Slightly uneven surfaces. According to 3M, the foam takes up a gap of up to half its own thickness.
- ✅ Places where the strip gets warm. According to 3M, VHB accommodates the different thermal expansion of the bonded parts, and the foam stays elastic from −40 to 90 °C.
Limitations. The LED strip is rated IP20, so install it in dry rooms only. VHB holds the strip in place but does not protect the LEDs from moisture. For polypropylene and polyethylene the 300LSE strip is the better choice: 3M gives it very good adhesion to polypropylene and names these plastics difficult surfaces for VHB.

Questions and answers
Can the strip on 3M VHB go in a bathroom or outdoors?
No. The LED strip is rated IP20 and is meant for dry rooms. VHB holds it to the surface but does not protect the LEDs from water.
When should I choose the standard strip on 3M 300LSE?
When bonding to polypropylene or polyethylene. 3M gives 300LSE very good adhesion to polypropylene and lists these plastics as difficult surfaces for VHB.
How do I apply the VHB strip?
According to 3M, clean the surface with a 1:1 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water. Press the tape on firmly, at about 100 kPa (about 1 kg/cm²). The ideal application temperature is 21–38 °C; 3M does not recommend applying it below 10–15 °C.
