Fibre optic star ceiling – what the kit consists of
Fibre optic lighting is the way to a star ceiling: one LED light engine hidden above the ceiling feeds a bundle of thin fibres, and their ends, brought out through the ceiling, shine like stars. There is no electricity and no heat in the ceiling itself – colour, brightness and twinkle are set on the light engine. The kit has three parts: a fibre optic light engine (16, 30 or 50 W), the fibres – on a reel to cut yourself or a ready-made bundle of uniform length – and, for stretch ceilings, Starsky fibre-light pins (packs of 250 and 500 pcs).
How to choose a fibre optic light engine
The number of stars one light engine can feed depends on the fibre diameter: with Ø 1.0 mm an output takes almost half as many fibres as with Ø 0.75 mm. First decide the number of points and the diameter, then the power and the number of outputs:
| Light engine | Outputs | Fibres Ø 0.75 mm | Fibres Ø 1.0 mm | Control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RGB+CCT 16 W, 1 output | 1 | up to 550 | up to 300 | RF remote + iStar Lighting app |
| RGB+CCT 16 W, 2 outputs | 2 (controlled together) | up to 2 × 550 | up to 2 × 300 | RF remote + iStar Lighting app |
| RGB+CCT 30 W, 2 outputs | 2 (controlled together) | up to 2 × 1400 | up to 2 × 700 | RF remote + iStar Lighting app, fan cooling |
| RGBW 50 W with touch panel | 1 | up to 1400 | up to 800 | touch wall panel + My Smart LED app, fan |
RGB+CCT or RGBW?
The RGB+CCT light engines (16 W and 30 W) give RGB colours plus white tunable from 2700 K to 6500 K – warm to cool. The RGBW 50 W has a separate cool-white 6500 K channel without colour-temperature adjustment, but the largest capacity on a single output and a wall panel to control it without a phone.
One output or two?
Two outputs mean two bundles from one light engine – handy for a large ceiling or when the fibre routes run in two directions. Both outputs are controlled together, though, and do not form two independent zones: two separately controlled zones need two light engines.
Fibre on a reel or a ready-made bundle?
The Ø 0.75 mm reel holds 2700 m, the Ø 1.0 mm reel 1500 m. Fibres from a reel are cut to the route from the light engine to each point, so every star can have its own length – the choice for ceilings with an irregular layout. A ready-made bundle is 550 fibres Ø 0.75 mm of uniform 4 m length with an end fitting for the light engine: it connects without cutting or preparing the bundle face, provided 4 m reaches from the light engine to the farthest point. One bundle equals the capacity of one 16 W light engine output.
How much fibre to order – an example
Start by measuring the longest route from where the light engine will sit. Example: 550 points × 4 m of fibre = 2200 m, so a 2700 m reel leaves about 500 m spare for trimming and longer routes. With 4 m pieces a Ø 0.75 mm reel yields about 675 fibres, a Ø 1.0 mm reel about 375 (excluding waste and reserve).
Installing a star ceiling in a stretch or suspended ceiling
The light engine is mounted above the ceiling – in a ventilated spot with service access and room to connect the bundle and the power supply (the 30 W and 50 W models have a fan; do not block the vents). The fibres pass through holes in the ceiling, are fixed with hot glue and trimmed after installation. A bundle from a reel is prepared for the light engine: aligned ends wrapped with heat-resistant tape, the connector with its nut tightened, the face cut flat – then every fibre lights evenly. The light engines run from a 12 V DC (16 W, 30 W) or 24 V DC (50 W) power supply, never directly from the mains. We recommend a qualified installer; each light engine comes with a PDF manual.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make a fibre optic star ceiling?
Count the points and measure the longest route, pick the fibre diameter and a light engine from the table above, order a reel or a ready-made bundle and, for a stretch ceiling, Starsky pins. Installation: holes, gluing the fibres, connecting the bundle to the light engine, trimming the excess.
How many fibres can one light engine feed?
From 550 (16 W, 1 output, Ø 0.75 mm) to 2 × 1400 (30 W, 2 outputs). With Ø 1.0 mm the numbers are lower: 300, 2 × 300, 2 × 700 and 800 for the 50 W.
Fibre optic star ceiling or LED points – what is the difference?
In the fibre optic version a single source hidden above the ceiling does the lighting and the ceiling holds only fibre ends: no electricity, no heat, no electronics in each point. The points are as fine as real stars, and the colour and twinkle of the whole sky change with one remote or in the app.
Can the light engine go in a bathroom or a sauna?
According to the manuals the light engines are indoor devices – they are not installed in damp places or where exposed to water. Ask us before ordering about use in a bathroom or a sauna.
How much does a fibre optic star ceiling cost?
The kit cost is the light engine, the fibre (reel or bundle) and the installation. Current wholesale net prices are on the product pages above; for larger projects we prepare an individual quotation.
