Steel Angle Brackets from 2K-Trade – Sizes, Selection and Use

Steel angle brackets from the 2K-Trade catalogue are a mounting accessory for stretch ceilings: ceiling-mounted profiles (GAMMA 30 VERT, SIGMA-NEO LED, DOUBLE-BOX, DELTA BOX, CONTOUR-PRO LUX-SU) hang on them and they build the drop for niche profiles. Three sizes: 70 × 55 × 30, 80 × 55 × 30 and 80 × 50 × 30 mm, packed in 20s. Bracket spacing follows the profile’s requirements and the installer’s decision.

In the 2K-Trade catalogue the steel angle brackets sit under accessories, next to screws, harpoons and seals – and that is how they should be read: not a building component, but a small piece of hardware without which a profile cannot be hung where there is nothing to screw it to. This article explains what the bracket does in a stretch-ceiling system, which catalogue profiles need it and how the three available sizes differ.

What the bracket does in a stretch ceiling

A wall profile is screwed straight to the wall and needs no bracket. Things change when the profile has to hang below the slab: in a lighting niche, on the second level of a ceiling, along a wall that must not be drilled, or in a light line running through the middle of a room. The profile then has no mounting plane of its own and one has to be built for it. That is exactly what the bracket does: one leg is screwed to the slab, the profile is screwed to the other. A dozen or a few dozen such points make the line on which the profile hangs – and on the profile, the membrane.

The product cards say plainly which profiles are mounted this way. “On brackets to the ceiling” is the mounting method of the LED profile GAMMA 30 VERT and of the niche profile SIGMA-NEO LED. The profiles DOUBLE-BOX and DELTA BOX (currently made to order, per the card) are mounted “to the wall with adhesive and/or to the ceiling with brackets” – the solution for walls of porcelain tile, glass or mirror where drilling is out of the question. The contour profile CONTOUR-PRO LUX-SU is a ceiling profile that is hung on brackets when its plane has to sit lower than the slab.

Building the drop for niche and two-level profiles

Ceiling profiles of the SU family – for example COMFORT-SU 130 or CLASSIC-SU 125 – are screwed directly to the slab, and the membrane then hangs just below it. If the same room is to get a niche for an LED strip or a second, lower level, the niche profile has to come down by the height of the niche. The bracket carries that profile to the required height: the vertical leg sets the distance from the slab, the horizontal leg holds the profile. For larger drops installers combine brackets with their own sub-frame; the bracket is then the part that ties the sub-frame to the profile.

Fixing to the slab

The bracket transfers the tension of the membrane to the slab, so what matters is not the bracket itself but what it is screwed with. Concrete and solid brick take expansion dowels with screws; hollow blocks and plasterboard take fixings chosen for that substrate. Three sizes in the catalogue

Three brackets are on offer: Steel angle 70 × 55 × 30 mm, Steel angle 80 × 55 × 30 mm and Steel angle 80 × 50 × 30 mm. According to the product card all three share the same construction: galvanised steel sheet, additional stiffening ribs and a large number of holes. Each is packed in 20 pieces. They differ only in the dimensions of the legs – and that is the only selection criterion.

How many brackets per metre of profile

There is no single number to put on an order. Bracket spacing follows the mounting requirements of the given profile, whether the run is straight or curved, the mass of the profile and the size of the membrane the profile will hold. A safe ordering practice: count the points from your own installation layout and add the spare from the pack – at 20 pieces per pack the price difference is small, while running out of a few brackets halfway through the job stops the work.

Only in the dimensions of the legs: 70 × 55 × 30, 80 × 55 × 30 and 80 × 50 × 30 mm. The construction is the same – galvanised sheet with ribs and many holes. The larger dimension gives a greater distance of the profile from the slab, the narrower bracket fits where space is short.
