Drywall ceilings have long outgrown the role of a simple cover for wiring. Today they host acoustic panels, hidden ventilation — and, increasingly, drywall LED profiles that turn a flat slab of gypsum into a luminous design element. 2K-Trade offers two cost-effective, high-quality solutions: GK LINE IN 20 and GK LINE IN 30. Both let you create clean, continuous light lines without bulky fixtures, while staying easy to install in standard UD/CD frames. Below you’ll learn when to choose the 20 mm channel, when 30 mm makes more sense, how to paint the ceiling without ruining heat dissipation, and which diffuser to pick for the perfect glow.
GK LINE IN 20 is a low, flush-mounted LED profile for plasterboard, ideal where minimum building thickness is important. The profile is only 14.4 mm high and the width of the light gap is approximately 20 mm, allowing for an elegant line of light concealed in the ceiling. Thanks to this low height, the GK LINE IN 20 works well in thin constructions – it can even be installed in areas with limited built-in space. Despite its filigree dimensions, the profile is made of aluminium weighing approximately 0.35 kg/mb, which ensures good rigidity and effective cooling of the LED strip, extending its service life.
GK LINE IN 20 – compact profile for discreet lighting
✅ Application versatility: GK LINE IN 20 will accommodate LED strips up to 20 mm wide, so you can use both single strong strips and two narrower strips side by side for maximum intense and even lighting. The profile makes it possible to create continuous sections – it has side grooves for easily joining several sections into one line, which is useful for longer installations.
✅ Easy finishing: GK LINE IN 20 is supplied unfinished (Mill Finish), so priming, filling and painting the part of the profile facing the ceiling surface is made easy. Aluminium accepts smoothness and paint well, allowing the profile to be aesthetically integrated into the ceiling. However, it must be remembered that the interior of the profile (the place for the LED strip) should not be painted – more about this later in this article.
GK LINE IN 30 – a broad line of light with a modern twist
GK LINE IN 30 is a wider LED profile for drywall, created for striking, more expressive lighting. The 34 mm wide channel allows two LED strips or one higher-powered strip to be installed at the same time, resulting in a wider and brighter line of light ideally suited to modern arrangements. As with the 20 version, the height of the GK LINE IN 30 profile is only 14.4 mm and its outer edges are narrow (approx. 12.4 mm), allowing for almost invisible installation – the profile flushes with the ceiling surface, exposing only the light gap.
✅ Power and functionality: by choosing GK LINE IN 30 we gain flexibility in the choice of light source. We can use two standard LED strips for increased brightness or one professional strip with a high diode density for a very intense light line. The wide aperture ensures that the light is evenly dispersed over a larger area, which looks impressive in larger commercial and domestic spaces, for example.
✅ Robust construction: the GK LINE IN 30 profile weighs approximately 0.40 kg/mb, which translates into efficient heat dissipation from up to two LED strips simultaneously. This ensures that the LEDs do not overheat and that the overall lighting lasts longer. Aluminium in Mill Finish makes it easy to prepare for painting – the surfaces adjacent to the panel can be mudded and painted together with the ceiling for perfect aesthetics, leaving only the inside of the LED channel unpainted (which we elaborate on in the next paragraph). The profiles are supplied in 2-metre lengths (packaged in 10-metre lengths) for easy transport and on-site installation.
Can LED plasterboard profiles be painted together with the ceiling?
A frequent question when finishing a ceiling with built-in LED profiles is the question of painting – should the aluminium LED profile in the plasterboard be painted together with the entire ceiling or not? The GK LINE IN profile (like other built-in profiles) is designed so that its visible edges can be aesthetically integrated into the ceiling surface. This means that the outer elements of the profile can be plastered and painted – thanks to the raw aluminium finish, paint adheres well to them. However, the inside of the profile, i.e. the part where the LED strip and the cover will be placed, must not be painted! Painting the inside walls of the profile can cause problems: the paint creates a slippery layer to which the LED strip will not adhere well, it also makes it more difficult to slide the diffuser (cover) on or off and worsens the heat dissipation.
So what should I do when painting a ceiling? When painting, it is best to secure the profile with painter’s tape or foil – seal the profile’s opening while painting the ceiling to prevent paint from getting inside. First we install the profile in the plasterboard, then we mud and smooth the joints of the profile’s edges with the plasterboard and before the painting itself we cover the gap. After painting the ceiling, it is enough to remove the tape/foil – the inside of the profile will remain clean, aluminium, ready for gluing the LED tape and installing the cover. This solution will ensure the longevity of the installation: the LED tape will stick firmly to the profile, and the aluminium without the paint layer will better dissipate the heat from the LEDs.
Which covers (diffusers) are compatible with GK LINE IN profiles?
Aluminium profiles are only part of the system – to achieve the final effect of a continuous line of light, suitable LED covers (diffusers) must be used. We offer dedicated diffusers for the GK LINE IN profiles:
- GK LINE IN 20: This narrow profile uses only one type of cover – the soft LED diffuser DF-G.20. It is a flexible plastic bezel that disperses light evenly across its 20 mm width. The DF-G.20 diffuser provides a uniform line of light with no visible LED spots and an aesthetically pleasing finish to the gap. (Both the profile and the cover are perfectly matched to each other – installation consists of pressing the flexible cover into the profile channel). You can order this cover here: LED soft diffuser DF-G.20.
- GK LINE IN 30: two types of covers are available for the wider profile. The first is the soft LED diffuser DF-G.30 – a flexible diffuser that precisely fills the wide 34 mm gap and ensures uniform light diffusion. The second is the hard LED diffuser DH-G.30 – a rigid, milky-white diffuser that also provides a uniform line of light without any spot effect. It is worth adding that a black version of the diffuser is also available for the GK LINE IN 30 profile (for unusual design effects when the profile is, for example, black inside). All of these covers can be found in the LED profile covers category on offer – you can easily select one to suit your needs. Remember that using dedicated diffusers not only guarantees a better appearance of the lighting, but also protects the LED strips from dust and touch.
