Optical fibre for star ceiling Ø 1.0 mm – 1500 m reel

Optical fibre Ø 1.0 mm on a 1500 m reel is the fibre for a self-made star ceiling bundle: each fibre is cut to the route from the light engine to its point in the ceiling, so every “star” can have its own length. With 4 m pieces one reel yields about 375 fibres (excluding waste and reserve).

The fibre carries light from the light engine – there is no electricity or heat in the ceiling, and colour and twinkle are set on the light engine. The 1.0 mm diameter sets how many fibres one light engine output can take – see the table below. Thicker fibre = brighter, sharper points with fewer of them per output.

Preparing the bundle for the light engine

Schematic drawing in the gallery (steps from the light engine manual; the connector depends on the model). With the power disconnected: 1 – align the fibre ends and wrap the bundle with heat-resistant tape (above 130 °C); 2 – pass the bundle through the connector and tighten the nut so that all fibres lie in one plane; 3 – cut the bundle face flat with a hot knife or blade; 4 – check that the face is smooth and clean, so every fibre lights evenly; 5 – slide the connector with the bundle into the light engine’s mounting ring and tighten the screw.

Installing the fibres in the ceiling

1 – drill the holes in the ceiling, 2 – glue the fibres, 3 – cut off the excess after installation. Start by measuring the farthest point: for example 550 fibres × 4 m = 2200 m, so a 2700 m reel leaves about 500 m spare. We recommend a qualified installer.
